Firefighters were called to a gas leak on Stacey Street near the junction of Shaftesbury Avenue.

A ruptured gas main under the roadway was removed and gas levels in surrounding buildings were monitored. A 50-metre cordon was put in place and around 45 people were evacuated from nearby properties as a precaution. There were no reports of any injuries.

Station Commander Daniel Perrett, who was at the scene, said: "Crews worked with partners to isolate a ruptured gas main and made the scene safe.

"The incident was protracted and continued into the evening on Monday [15 June]. There were road closures in place, which was causing some disruption. People were encouraged to avoid the area where possible.

"A rest centre was established to support affected local residents as crews worked to resolve the incident. Any residents seeking an update can call Cadent on 0800 389 8000."

The Brigade was called at 1331 and three fire engines and two command units from Soho, Euston, Bethnal Green and Dowgate fire stations were at the scene. The incident was over by 2021 [Monday 16 June].
