What is extreme weather?

Extreme weather events are unusually severe or fluctuating weather and climate conditions that can have serious consequences for communities, homes and businesses. These include prolonged heatwaves with very high temperatures, intense winter freezes and heavy snowfall, torrential rainfall that can cause flooding, and powerful storms with strong winds. Each season brings its own risks, so while the advice may vary, being prepared for extreme weather is important throughout the year.

It is essential to be prepared and know how to respond in any of these situations. Our Winter and Summer Extreme Weather Booklets offer detailed guidance and safety advice tailored to different seasonal scenarios. We also recommend reading our top tips on grass and wildfires, especially during warmer, drier months when the risk increases significantly.

Wildfires can start during long periods of hot and dry weather and are occurring increasingly frequently. A single spark from a barbecue, cigarette or glass bottle can ignite dry vegetation and cause a fire to spread quickly. If you see a wildfire, move to a safe area, call 999 with precise location details, and do not attempt to tackle the fire yourself.

Take action now to stay informed, stay safe, and help prevent extreme weather emergencies.
