Six fire engines and around 40 firefighters attended a fire at a block of flats on Gerry Raffles Square in Stratford.

Part of a flat on an upper floor was damaged by fire. One man was rescued from the flat by firefighters wearing breathing apparatus. He was taken to hospital by London Ambulance Service.

The Brigade was alerted to the fire after a neighbour heard a smoke alarm sounding. After going to investigate, they saw smoke coming from the flat and called 999.

A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said: “This incident highlights the importance of working smoke alarms and heat detection.

“Smoke alarms give the earliest possible warning when a fire starts and we would urge everyone to make sure they have one fitted in every room where a fire can start except kitchens or bathrooms where heat alarms are more appropriate.”

The Brigade was called at 2114 and Control Officers mobilised crews from Stratford, Plaistow, Leytonstone, Leyton, Bethnal Green and Poplar fire stations to the scene. The fire was extinguished by 2200.

The cause of the fire has been recorded as accidental.
