Six fire engines and around 40 firefighters tackled a fire on Tovil Close in Penge.

Half of the first floor of a maisonette was damaged by the fire, whilst part of the ground floor was damaged. A garden shed and surrounding fencing was destroyed by flames while neighbouring properties were also partially damaged. Six people left the property before the Brigade arrived and there are no reports of any injuries.

The fire is believed to have been caused by the failure of a lithium battery associated with an e-bike which had been on charge outside.

The Brigade's 999 Control Officers received 24 calls about the fire. The Brigade was called at 0905 and the fire was under control by 1000. Crews from Woodside, Beckenham, West Norwood, Croydon, Norbury and Forest Hill fire stations attended the scene.
