London Fire Commissioner Jonathan Smith has been formally presented with the King's Fire Service Medal at an investiture ceremony at Windsor Castle by Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal.

The honour was awarded following the announcement in the King's 2026 Birthday Honours and recognises Commissioner Smith's distinguished career, including his leadership of the UK's largest and busiest metropolitan fire and rescue service.

Commissioner Smith joined London Fire Brigade in 2019 and has played a pivotal role in leading the organisation through a period of significant change and improvement. During his time with the Brigade, he has overseen responses to major incidents, represented London on national resilience and preparedness forums, and led high-profile national events including the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II and the Coronation of King Charles III.

It has given me the opportunity to reflect on a career shaped by exceptional colleagues, remarkable experiences and a shared dedication to serving the public.

“While I am honoured to accept this medal, it also serves as a reminder that achievements in the fire and rescue service are never the result of one person alone. I have been fortunate to work alongside people whose professionalism and courage inspire me every day.

“Public service is about making a positive difference to people’s lives, and I remain as motivated as ever to ensure we continue delivering the very best for Londoners.”
