Ten fire engines and around 70 firefighters were called to a fire near Mount Pleasant Lane in Clapton.
The fire has been affecting a block of maisonettes. The fire has now been brought under control; however firefighters are expected to remain on scene through the night working to fully extinguish the fire and to dampen down.
Firefighters carried out a search of the building and assisted at least one resident to safety. One person has been assessed at the scene by emergency service crews but did not require hospital treatment. There have been no reports of any further casualties at this time.
Station Commander Tom Sharp, who has been at the scene, said: "The fire was producing a significant amount of smoke. We advised people in the local area to keep their windows and doors closed due to smoke travel. This advice has now been lifted.
"A rest centre has been set up locally for around 20 residents impacted by this fire. We have officers and our Community Engagement team working alongside the local authority and other partner agencies to support these residents."
The Brigade received the first of 65 calls about this fire at 2004 and Control Officers mobilised crews from Stoke Newington, Tottenham, Homerton and surrounding fire stations to the scene. A 32-metre turntable ladder was also in attendance.
The fire was brought under control by 2254.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
