Six fire engines and around 40 firefighters were called to a brazier fire (also called a fire pit) in a rear garden at a house on Ewell Road in Surbiton.
A lean-to on the ground floor was completely destroyed by fire as well as a small part of the ground floor in a house of multiple occupancy.
The Brigade's 999 Control officers were first called at 1053 and deployed crews from Surbiton, Kingston, New Malden and two fire engines from Surrey Fire and Rescue service. The fire was under control by 1242.
The cause of the fire is believed to be due to the brazier being placed too close to property. A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said: "This fire in Surbiton, caused by a fire pit, serves as a warning to use fire pits carefully.
"Fire pits should be placed at least three feet away from anything combustible, like property, fences, sheds and trees.
"Don’t leave fire pits unattended and make sure they’re fully out when you finish using them. We always recommend dousing in water to ensure it is fully extinguished."
