Eight fire engines and around 60 firefighters were called to a fire on Edge Hill in Woolwich this morning.

Firefighters tackled a fire at a three-storey building where two cars, a caravan, garages and a number flats were affected. 

A number of flats were damaged due to the heat of the fire, while around three garages and all of the vehicles were completely destroyed.

Around 10 residents were evacuated from the building and six people were rescued by firefighters. Five adults and one child suffering from smoke inhalation were taken to hospital by the London Ambulance Service. 

The Brigade's Control Office took the first of 26 calls at 0135 and mobilised fire crews from Plumbstead, East Greenwich, Eltham and other surrounding fire stations to the scene. The fire was brought under control at 0359. 

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
