Ten fire engines and around 70 firefighters tackled a fire at an industrial estate on Ferry Lane in Rainham.

The fire involved three shipping containers of mixed household goods. There are no reports of any injuries.

A water relay system was implemented as part of firefighting operations. Fire engines were stationed between the incident site and the nearest water hydrant, and then connected together by hose. This allowed crews to pump a constant supply of water to the scene of the fire.

The fire is believed to have been accidental and was caused by combustible items left too close to an uncontrolled bonfire.

A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said: "We would urge people to consider if their bonfire is necessary and to take care if you’re burning waste at home or at work.

"If you’re having a bonfire never leave it unattended and consider your neighbours.

"Make sure you build it clear of buildings, garden sheds, fences and hedges and never use flammable liquids to start it or burn dangerous items such as aerosol cans. Always keep a bucket of water or a hosepipe nearby in case of fire.

“Always check your local authority’s advice on bonfires and follow our safety tips."

Control Officers took one call at 2145 and mobilised crews from Wennington, Dagenham, Barking and surrounding fire stations to the scene. The fire was under control by 0044.
