Spot the warning signs:

Could your e-bike or e-scooter start a fire?

Lithium-ion batteries often show signs of failure before they catch fire. Recognising these signs early can help prevent an incident.

The warning signs

If you notice any of these warning signs, stop using the battery immediately and take action.

Is the battery becoming unusually hot?

Batteries normally generate some heat when charging or in use.

However, if a battery becomes extremely hot to the touch it may be defective and could start a fire.

Is the battery swollen or bulging?

A battery that appears swollen or misshapen is a strong sign that it is failing.

Other warning signs include lumps, leaking or physical damage to the battery casing.

Are there unusual smells or sounds?

Failing lithium-ion batteries may produce:

  • hissing or cracking sounds
  • strong chemical smells

These can indicate internal damage.

What you should do if your lithium-ion battery is a fire risk

If your battery shows any of these signs of failing, immediately turn off the device and unplug it from the power source.  Call the device manufacturer or retailer for further instructions.

If you’ve spotted the warning signs, make sure you report your faulty battery to your local Trading Standards office.

What should you do if a battery begins to smoke?

If a battery begins to smoke or catches fire:

  • get out immediately
  • raise the alarm
  • call 999
  • do not attempt to tackle the fire yourself

Lithium-ion battery fires can spread rapidly and produce toxic smoke.
