How to stay safe
- Know your route. Check a map to see if it takes you near water.
- If you're going near water, consider telling someone your route, or sharing your location on an app.
- Stay on paths and well away from the water’s edge, especially when water levels are high.
- Pay attention to hazards like uneven riverbanks, tree roots, ropes and mooring stakes on towpaths.
Take extra care in the winter months when ice, rain, mud and fallen leaves can create slippery conditions.
Dog walkers
We all love our pets and want to keep them safe. However, don’t get into danger yourself while trying to rescue a dog from water.
- Make sure you can control your dog on and off the lead near water.
- If you do let it off the lead, always check it’s safe for both of you.
- Never enter the water to rescue your dog. They often manage to scramble out on their own. If you get into trouble, who will rescue you? Instead, call 999.
