Driving safely in winter:

be prepared for snow, ice, rain and wind

Winter weather, like snow, ice and storms, can create difficult driving conditions. Make sure you know how to stay safe:

Check your route before you leave

Winter weather might cause road closures, delays and diversions. Check your route before leaving, and check the National Highways website for the latest updates.

Leave extra time

Giving yourself some extra time means you won’t be tempted to go faster than is safe. Make sure you leave enough time to clear your windows and mirrors of ice or snow too.

Gritting

In icy weather try to stick to routes which have been gritted. You can search for which roads your council will grit.

Consider braking distances

It can take up to ten times longer to stop in icy conditions. If you suspect a road is icy, avoid steering or braking harshly, in case your tyres lose their grip. Keep both hands on the wheel and take your time.

Emergency winter travel kits

The Met Office has advice on how to prepare a winter kit for your vehicle. Containing useful items from de-icer to a shovel, a winter travel kit is an essential item for your boot.

Maintain your vehicle

The RAC offers advice on quick winter driving checks before a journey. So whether you’ve got a long drive home for Christmas, or a more local trip, make sure your vehicle is winter-ready.
