Preparing for an inspection by the fire brigade
London Fire Brigade is responsible for carrying out inspections to ensure certain properties are safe. If you have been notified about, or you are expecting an inspection, this page will help you prepare. We have highlighted what responsibilities you may need to consider, the safety features we will be checking and tools that can help you prepare.
Your responsibilities
There will be a number of areas you may need to consider before an inspection, if you are responsible for the property. These include:
- The responsibilities of a landlord in managing a property
- How to create an emergency plan, and why you need one
- Your duties under fire safety law explained
- The unique fire safety needs of heritage buildings
Safety features in your building
When our inspectors visit, they'll be taking a look at safety features that exist in your building. They will check:
- Do you have the correct fire alarm system and is it working?
- Are your fire doors correctly installed and right for your property?
- Information on your sprinkler system, or if you need one installed for your building?
Tools to help you
There are two interactive tools that can help identify fire safety issues in a property:
- Our Home Fire Safety Checker can help residential tenants stay safe and offer them bespoke advice for their home
- The Business Fire Safety Awareness Tool is for small business owners, help you understand your legal duties for fire safety in the workplace
