Here’s our advice on how to make sure your celebrations go to plan.
Menorahs
We appreciate the need for real candle flames during Hanukkah, so rather than recommending you switch to LED candles, we suggest the following:
- Homemade menorahs are great for decoration, but not for use with candles.
- Place your menorah on a stable surface where it won’t topple over.
- Your matches or lighters need to be kept well away from children.
- When your menorah is lit it shouldn’t be left unattended.
- Once a candle is lit - don’t move it.
- If placing your menorah on a windowsill, make sure you keep the curtains or blinds well out of the way.
- Blow out candles before going to bed.

Cooking
Whether you’re frying latkes or sufganiyots, we know that food is a big part of celebrating Hanukkah. So if you’re cooking with oil, follow our safety advice:
- Before you start cooking make sure your hob is clean and clear of any clutter.
- Also make sure that any children stay at least 3 feet away from the hob and can’t reach the handles of any pans.
- Hot oil can catch fire easily, so we ask you to be very careful when cooking with oil.
- Consider reducing the risk of fire by using a thermostat controlled deep-fat fryer.
- Try to avoid getting distracted while cooking, and don’t leave it unattended.
- If there is a fire - get out, close the doors behind you if you can, stay out and call 999. Never throw water onto an oil fire.
- When you’ve finished cooking, remember to switch off the hob.
