Safety warnings

With a heatwave in London set to continue into the weekend, people are being urged to act responsibly to keep themselves safe and protect communities from fires. A warning has been issued for the capital for a greater risk of grass fires and wildfires following an assessment from the Natural Hazards Partnership

London Fire Brigade Deputy Assistant Commissioner Jamie Jenkins said: “London is experiencing its third heatwave of the summer, which looks like it will last into next week. Whilst many people will be looking forward to spending time in the sunshine, we are also urging everyone to be responsible to prevent wildfires or tragedies around the water.

“Despite the heavy rainfall earlier this week, the Natural Hazards Partnership has assessed that the risk of wildfires in London is currently severe. This is because rainfall overall this year has been well below-average. With very little sign of rain during this heatwave, grass will become even drier, increasing the wildfire risk further each day.

“So far this year, firefighters have responded to around 23 wildfires in the capital, including four this week. There have also been countless call-outs to smaller fires involving grass, trees and in other outdoor spaces, as well as in people's gardens.

“During this latest heatwave, it is important everyone acts responsibly to prevent fires from occurring. As the weather has been so dry, it only takes a few sparks to lead to a fire spreading rapidly. In London, this is can be dangerous because so many of our green spaces lie close to homes and other properties.

“If you’re heading out, please don’t take a disposable BBQ with you. They can retain heat for several hours after use and are banned by local authorities from many of London's parks. Also make sure you are discarding of cigarettes properly and take rubbish home with you if no bins are available.

“At home, make sure your BBQ is positioned away from flammable items like fences, sheds, decking and trees and please don’t have any type of BBQ on your balcony. We’re also strongly advising people to avoid burning any waste in this type of weather and to not have bonfires, particularly in their gardens.”

Stay safe around water

During this heatwave, London’s rivers, lakes and waterways may look very appealing; however these can contain hidden dangers.

Deputy Assistant Commissioner Jamie Jenkins continued: "We know people will be looking for ways to cool off during this heatwave, but please don’t be tempted to jump into open water. Sadly, we’re currently seeing around two incidents every day where someone is in difficulty in the water.

“Open water may look inviting, but it’s unpredictable. Strong currents, underwater hazards, and cold-water shock all pose serious risks.

“Even on hot days, the water can be dangerously cold. Cold water shock can affect anyone, no matter how fit or experienced they are. It can cause involuntary gasping, water inhalation, and in the worst cases, drowning.

“Designated swimming areas have lifeguards and safety measures in place, but open water spots do not. Think twice before taking the risk.

“If you do find yourself in difficulty, remember the Royal National Lifeboat Institution's ‘Float to Live’ advice: tilt your head back with your ears submerged, relax, and try to control your breathing. Use your hands and feet to help you stay afloat.

“And if you see someone else in trouble, never jump in after them. Call 999, encourage them to float on their back, and throw them something that floats.

“We want everyone to enjoy the summer safely. Take a moment to familiarise yourself with local lifesaving equipment like throwlines, which are available at many of London’s waterways. There’s also a wealth of water safety advice on our website to help people stay safe during the warmer months.”
