Firefighters attended a flat fire on Canterbury Road in Croydon.
Most of a ground floor flat in the three-storey building was damaged by fire. Two people were treated at the scene by London Ambulance Service and taken to hospital as a precaution.
The Brigade's Control Officers gave vital Fire Survival Guidance (FSG) to residents on how to stay safe before firefighters arrived.
The Brigade was called at 0344 and Control Officers mobilised three fire engines from Croydon and Norbury fire stations to the scene. The fire was extinguished by 0425.
The fire is being treated as accidental and believed to have been caused by the unsafe disposal of a cigarette.
