Four fire engines and around 25 firefighters tackled a fire at a commercial building under renovation on Dufferin Street in Islington.

Part of the void between the ground and first floors was damaged by fire. One man was taken to hospital by London Ambulance Service crews.

Firefighters removed a gas cylinder from the entrance of the building and cooled it to an ambient temperature as a precaution, as some cylinders can explode when exposed to heat.

The Brigade’s Control Officers took the first of 10 calls to the fire at 2026 and sent crews from Shoreditch, Dowgate, Whitechapel and Soho fire stations to the scene. The fire was under control by 2217.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Brigade and the Metropolitan Police Service.
