Five fire engines and around 35 firefighters were called to a flat fire on Thomas Lane in Lewisham.

A small part of a three-roomed flat on the seventh floor of a nine storey block of flats was destroyed by fire. One man was rescued by crews wearing breathing apparatus and was taken to hospital by London Ambulance Service suffering from smoke inhalation.

The Brigade's 999 Control officers received a call at 0347 alerting them to the fire. They mobilised crews from Lewisham, Forest Hill, Greenwich, Lee Green and Deptford fire stations. The fire was under control by 0458.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
