Four fire engines and around 25 firefighters attended a flat fire on Staunton Street in Deptford.

Part of a ground-floor flat in a residential block was damaged by fire. Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus rescued a dog from the property. Sadly, two cats were found dead at the scene. There were no reports of any other injuries.

Firefighters used an animal oxygen therapy kit after rescuing the dog. The kit contains a set of oxygen masks, which are carried on all frontline fire engines and are designed to safely administer oxygen to small animals suffering from smoke inhalation.

The Brigade’s Control Officers took the first of three calls to the fire at 1349 and sent crews from Deptford, Greenwich, Peckham and Dockhead fire stations to the scene. The fire was under control by 1446.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
