Four fire engines and around 25 firefighters were called to a flat fire on Denmark Gardens in Carshalton.

A ground-floor flat was destroyed by fire and part of a split-level flat on the first and second floors was also damaged. Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus rescued a dog from the ground floor who was taken to a vets. There were no reports of any other injuries.

Firefighters used an animal oxygen therapy kit after rescuing the dog. The kit contains a set of oxygen masks, which are carried on all frontline fire engines and are designed to safely administer oxygen to small animals suffering from smoke inhalation.

The Brigade’s Control Officers took the first of 10 calls to the fire at 1716 and sent crews from Sutton, Wimbledon, Purley and Croydon fire stations to the scene. The fire was under control by 1835.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
