Ten fire engines and around 70 firefighters were called to a building fire on High Street in Beckenham this morning (30 September).

The fire was fully affecting the roof of a mixed-use building, currently under refurbishment, as well as the first and second floors of the building. This building has sustained a significant amount of damage as a result of the fire.

The fire has now been extinguished with crews remaining on scene for the rest of the day to dampen down.

There have been no reports of any injuries.

Station Commander Tony Perks, who was at the scene, said: "Firefighters have worked extremely hard to prevent the fire spreading significantly to adjoining buildings, including a cinema, resulting in very limited damage to those buildings.

"The fire was producing a significant amount of smoke and we advised people in the area to keep their windows and doors closed. This advice has now been lifted.

"The incident caused major traffic disruption in Beckenham and we asked people to avoid travelling through the area whilst the incident remains ongoing. Road closures remained in place through the night but these are now due to be lifted."

The Brigade received the first of 18 calls at 0759 and Control Officers mobilised crews from Beckenham, Bromley, Woodside, Forest Hill and surrounding fire stations to the scene. A 32-metre turntable ladder from Forest Hill has also attended and was used as a water tower to help extinguish the fire from above. The Brigade's drone team provided the Incident Commander with a greater situational awareness of the fire.

The fire was brought under control by 1033.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
