Four fire engines and around 25 firefighters dealt with flooding in the area around Lady Margaret Road in Kentish Town.

An 18-inch burst water main caused flooding to streets between Leighton Road and Kentish Town High Street. The basements of a medical centre and ten residential properties were affected by flooding up to a depth of around 1-metre. A pub and two shops were also flooded up to a depth of around 50cm.

A cordon was put in place and firefighters carried out a systematic search of the affected properties and rescued a man from a rear garden who was treated by on scene doctors.

Crews carried out salvage operations and used flood defence barriers, sand bags and pumps to divert flood water.

The Brigade was called at 0746 and fire crews from Kentish Town, Holloway, Euston and Islington fire stations attended the scene. The incident was over for firefighters by 1113.

Firefighters are urging Londoners to take some simple steps now to prepare in advance of potential flooding this winter. Spending an hour now might significantly reduce the amount of damage to a property and ensure your family and pets are safe.

  • Sign up for flood alert warnings can buy crucial extra time to keep safe and protect property when there’s risk of flooding.

  • Create a flood plan so the household knows what to do before an emergency hits - include details on where important documents are stored (always keep them in a waterproof place), know how to switch off electricity and water supplies.

  • Prepare a flood kit or emergency grab bag. It should contain essentials in case the home needs to be vacated in a hurry.
