Three fire engines and around 15 firefighters were called to a fire at a house on Romsey Road in Dagenham.
Half of the first floor of two storey terraced house was destroyed by fire. One man was treated on scene for smoke inhalation by London Ambulance Service and taken to hospital.
The Brigade's 999 Control officers received their first call alerting them to the fire at 0421. They deployed crews from Barking and Dagenham fire stations to the scene. The fire was under control by 0504.
The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Met police and the Brigade's fire investigators.
