Ten fire engines and around 70 firefighters were called to a building fire on Tunnel Avenue in Greenwich.
A two-storey industrial unit has been alight. The fire is under control and firefighters have worked through the night to extinguish the fire, aided by two 32-metre turntable ladders which have been used as water towers to extinguish the fire from above.
A small number of crews have spent the morning (5 November) dampening down and putting out deep seated pockets of fire and hotspots.
The fire was producing a significant amount of smoke but reduced considerably thanks to firefighting efforts. People in the local area were advised to keep windows and doors closed.
There have been no reports of any injuries. Two people were evacuated from a neighbouring property as a precaution.
A multi-agency decision was made to close a number of roads due to smoke travel.
This included both the Blackwall Tunnel and Silvertown Tunnel. The tunnels reopened in both directions overnight.
Local road closures remained in place this morning, including Tunnel Avenue and Blackwall Lane but closures have now been lifted. However, drivers travelling in the area are warned they may still face some disruption as work relating to the incident continues by multi-agency partners.
The Brigade was called at 1813 and Control Officers mobilised crews from East Greenwich, Greenwich. Deptford, Poplar and surrounding fire stations to the scene. The fire was brought under control by 2104.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
