Six fire engines and around 40 firefighters were called to a grass fire near Lea Bridge Road in Walthamstow.
Around an acre of marshland was alight. Firefighters used hosereels to extinguish the fire. Due to the remote location of the incident, firefighters implemented a water relay system as part of firefighting operations. Appliances were stationed between the incident site and the nearest water hydrant, and then connected together by hose. This allowed crews to pump a constant supply of water to the scene of the fire.
One of the Brigade’s wildfire response vehicles was also deployed. The vehicle, which is a continuation of a pilot that began last summer, was used to help extinguish hotspots is undergrowth that is harder to reach for a standard fire engine, The wildfire response vehicle has off-road capability and equipment that allows firefighters to pump and drive, enabling firefighters to tackle a fire more efficiently and safely. A Wildfire Support Officer, providing tactical support to the Incident Commander. The drone team were also in attendance, providing the Incident Commander with a greater situational awareness of the fire.
While the incident was ongoing, rail services were stopped as a precaution due to the proximity of the fire to the railway line.
The Brigade's Control Officers took around 15 calls about the fire.
The first call was received at 1423 and Control Officers mobilised crews from Walthamstow, Leyton and surrounding fire stations to the scene. The fire was brought under control by 1649.
