Firefighters have issued a reminder of their ducting (the extraction system) safety advice following a fire at a takeaway restaurant with dwellings above on Burdett Road in Tower Hamlets.
Part of the ground floor takeaway restaurant and half of the ducting between the ground floor and the third floor were damaged by the fire.
A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said: "We'd like to remind restaurant and takeaway owners they should ensure they don't have dirty ducting.
"If you don't clean your extraction system regularly, you're at greater risk of ducting fires. You should also make sure you keep the hob, cooker, hood and extractor fan clean too - a build up of fat and grease can ignite and cause a fire."
The Brigade's 999 Control Officers answered the first of 12 calls alerting them to the fire at 1353. They deployed fire crews from Poplar, Stratford, Plaistow and Leyton fire stations. The incident was over by 1457.
