Twenty-five fire engines and around 150 firefighters tackled a fire at an industrial estate on Maypole Crescent in Erith.
A single-storey, open-fronted warehouse containing around 100 tonnes of mixed waste was alight, along with three diggers, four large good vehicles and 55 cars. There were no reports of any injuries.
Three 32-metre turntable ladders were deployed to provide a vantage point for assessing the scene and to deliver water from above.
One of the Brigade's fire boats was also mobilised to the incident to provide additional water supply if needed. The boat has two remote-operated water monitors which can pump 2,500 litres per minute, to help with firefighting operations from the Thames.
Assistant Commissioner Pat Goulbourne said: “Our crews worked hard throughout the night at a large fire on an industrial estate in Erith. While the fire was under control early Saturday morning, we continued to tackle some areas of waste material that were still alight throughout the day.
"The estate and the nearby roads were closed and we advised residents or those who work at the site to avoid the area.
“Residents were also advised to keep their doors and windows closed as there was a lot of smoke in the area.”
The Brigade's Control Officers took the first of 15 calls to the fire at 2247 and mobilised crews from Bexley, Erith, Plumstead, East Greenwich, Sidcup and surrounding fire stations to the scene. The fire was under control by 0652.
Due to extensive damage, the cause of the fire has been recorded as undetermined.
A UK Health Security Agency spokesperson said: “So far, there have been no reports of any people experiencing ill effects from this fire. London Fire Brigade is on-site dealing with the fire and the other agencies involved will continue to monitor the situation and issue advice to the public, businesses and organisations affected as necessary.”
