Firefighters have issued an important reminder about using incense sticks safely after a flat fire on Winchelsea Road in Stonebridge.
Half of a flat on the first floor of a terraced house converted into two flats was damaged by fire.
The fire is believed to have been accidental and caused by incense sticks. Fire investigators also found smoke alarms failed to alert the occupants to the fire due a missing battery in a smoke alarm.
A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said: "Incense sticks, candles and oil burners are one of the most common causes of fire within homes. It’s really important that you never leave these items unattended.
"Make sure you place incense sticks in a suitable, fire-resistant holder and keep them away from curtains and anything else that can easily catch fire. Remember to put them out entirely when you leave the room and especially before bed.
"This incident shows just how important it is to have working smoke alarms fitted on every level of your property.
“Smoke alarms give the earliest possible warning when a fire starts and we would urge everyone to make sure they have one fitted in every room where a fire can start except kitchens or bathrooms where heat alarms are more appropriate.
"We also recommend taking some time to carry out a few simple checks to keep yourself and your loved ones safe. The Brigade’s online Home Fire Safety Checker can guide you around your home and provide you with specific advice to reduce fire risks.”
The Brigade’s Control Officers took the first to the fire at 0957 and mobilised four fire engines and around 25 firefighters from Park Royal, Willesden and Wembley fire stations to the scene. The fire was under control by 1054.
