Twelve fire engines and around 80 firefighters tackled a fire at a building under renovation on Blackfen Road in Sidcup.

The ground floor, first floor, rear extension and roof of a shop with flats above were destroyed by fire. As a result, the roof and first floor collapsed. Part of the roof of an adjacent building was also damaged. There were no reports of any injuries.

Station Commander Steve Howlett, who was at the scene, said: "This was a very visible fire which produced a significant amount of smoke in the area. We advised people who live and work in the vicinity to keep windows and doors closed.

"One of our 32-metre turntable ladders was used as a water tower at the incident, to help tackle flames from height.

"Blackfen Road was closed and some bus routes were affected. We asked people to avoid the area while we worked to make the scene safe."

The Brigade's Control Officers took nearly 30 calls to the fire and mobilised crews from Eltham, Lee Green, Sidcup, East Greenwich and surrounding fire stations to the scene. The fire was under control by 1639.

The fire is believed to have been accidental and caused by hot works.
