Four fire engines and around 25 firefighters attended a fire on Commercial Road in Shadwell.
The fire was affecting part of a roof terrace on a five-storey mixed-use building. There were no reports of any injuries.
The incident caused traffic disruption and the Brigade advised motorists the avoid the area whilst the incident remained ongoing.
The Brigade was called at 1515 and Control Officers mobilised crews from Shadwell, Bethnal Green, Islington and Shoreditch fire stations to the scene, along with a 64-metre turntable ladder from Old Kent Road Fire Station.
The fire was extinguished by 1633.
The fire is being treated as accidental and believed to have been caused by hot works.
