Four fire engines and around 25 firefighters were called to a fire at a shop with flats above on Romford Road in Manor Park E12.

A small part of the ground floor shop was destroyed by fire. Two people from the flat above the shop evacuated before the arrival of the Brigade. Thankfully no injuries were reported.

The Brigade's 999 Control Officers were first called at 0538 by a quick-thinking taxi driver who was passing by the shop and saw smoke coming from the shop front. Crews from Stratford, East Ham and Ilford fire stations were deployed to the scene. The fire was under control by 0636.

The cause of the fire is believed to be accidental and due to a capacitor failure within a freezer.
