Mathew Walker joined London Fire Brigade in October 2025, bringing with him extensive senior leadership experience.
He began his career in the emergency services in 2003 at South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service, following several years as a professional rugby player in England and Ireland, during which he also represented England at Under-21 level.

After leaving South Yorkshire, Mathew served with National Resilience as a Command-and-Control Advisor, supporting complex, multi-agency operations at national level.
He was later appointed Deputy Chief Fire Officer at North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service, where he held Gold Command responsibilities for major incidents such as the Langdale Moor fire.
His most recent move has brought him to London Fire Brigade as Deputy Commissioner and Operational Director for Preparedness and Response. Outside of work, Mathew is a proud father of three, a keen golfer, and currently serves as Chair of UK Fire Sport Golf.
