Firefighters are reminding Londoners to be careful when cooking after a fire at a bungalow on Thurlow Park Road, West Norwood.

A small part of the bungalow was damaged by fire. One woman left the property before the Brigade arrived. She was treated on scene by London Ambulance Service crews and taken to hospital.

The fire is believed to have been accidental and caused by cooking.

Firefighters' top tips for safer cooking:

  • Never leave cooking unattended
  • If you are tired, have been drinking alcohol or are feeling unwell, don’t cook. It is always safer to order a takeaway or eat something that doesn’t require cooking
  • Don’t leave fabrics and cloths near to the hob and take care with loose clothing
  • Keep the oven, hob, cooker hood, extractor fan and grill clean - built up fat and grease can catch fire easily

The Brigade were called at 2030 and the fire was under control by 2104. Two fire engines and around 10 firefighters from West Norwood fire station attended the scene.
