Four fire engines and around 25 firefighters were called to a fire at a block of flats on Alfred Road in Westminster.
Firefighters attended a fire in a ground floor bin chute, which had caused smoke to travel up the chute and through some of the other floors of the building. About 40 people left the building before the Brigade arrived.
The Brigade was called at 0246 and the fire was under control by 0333. Fire crews from Paddington and North Kensington fire stations attended the incident.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
