Eight fire engines and around 60 firefighters were called to a fire at a house in Centurion Square in Woolwich.
The ground floor, first and second floors of the property were damaged by fire.
Two people left the property before the arrival of the Brigade and were taken to hospital by London Ambulance Service. Sadly one woman was found dead at the scene by crews wearing breathing apparatus.
The Brigade’s 999 control officers took 23 calls to the fire.
The Brigade was called 0122 and the fire was under control at 0312. Fire crews from East Greenwich, Eltham, Plumstead, Greenwich and other surrounding fire stations attended the scene.
The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Brigade and the Metropolitan Police Service.
