Four fire engines and 21 firefighters and officers were called to a fire at a bungalow in Babington Road in Hornchurch.
Part of the bungalow and half of the roof of the property were damaged by fire. Five people were assisted from the property by firefighters wearing breathing apparatus and were treated at the scene for smoke inhalation by London Ambulance Service crews.
The Brigade was called at 1359 and the fire was under control at 1509. Fire crews from Hornchurch, Wennington and Dagenham fire stations attended the scene.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
