Four fire engines and 21 firefighters and officers were called to a fire at a block of flats in Island Road, Deptford early this morning.

Part of a flat on the third floor was damaged by fire.

Watch Manager Mat Cole, who was at the scene, said: “On arrival there was quite a bit of smoke coming out of the windows of the third floor flat. We were informed by a neighbour that there was a resident inside the flat. Crews wearing breathing apparatus went into the flat and rescued one woman who was treated at the scene by the London Ambulance Service and taken to hospital.

"Crews worked quickly and efficiently to put the fire out which was contained to the bedroom.”

The Brigade was called at 0410 and the fire was under control at 0510. Fire crews from Deptford, Old Kent Road, Dockhead and New Cross fire stations attended the scene.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Brigade and the Metropolitan Police Service.
