Firefighters have issued a safety warning after a tealight candle is believed to have caused a fire at a flat on Egerton Drive in Greenwich.

Part of a room on the first floor of the property was damaged by the blaze. A man left the property before the Brigade arrived. There were no reports of any injuries.

Station Officer Gary Deacon, who was at the scene, said: “Crews worked quickly to extinguish the fire and contained the fire to the living room.

“The Brigade’s fire investigators believe the fire was caused by a tealight coming into contact with flammable materials.

“Candles are one of the most common causes of fire and it’s very important they are kept away from anything that can easily catch fire and never left unattended.”

The Brigade was called at 2257 and the fire was under control by 2352. Fire crews from Greenwich, Lewisham, East Greenwich and Lee Green fire stations attended the incident.
