Firefighters rescued an inquisitive Staffordshire bull terrier who got stuck on the roof of her owner’s house in Alkham Road in Hackney.

Three-year-old Willow had managed to escape through a window in the loft conversion of the three-storey terraced house before making her way up onto the roof.

Stoke Newington White Watch Manager Jason Butcher, who was at the scene, said: “Willow had been missing for a few hours and at first they thought she had got out the front door but then they heard her up on the roof.

“She’s lucky she didn’t fall as it was only a small ledge where she got out of the window. She then climbed up the pitched roof and onto a flat area. Every now and then they could see her looking through the Velux window.

“When we got the aerial ladder platform in place, Willow came to the edge to see what was going on and Firefighter Richard Kirby went up and brought her back down to safety before handing her over to her relieved owner.

“We would always urge people to contact the RSPCA if they see an animal stuck or in distress.

“Firefighters love animals too and we are always happy to assist if the RSPCA require our assistance and specialist equipment, as we used in this case.

“The work of a firefighter is so much more than just attending fires. Every day crews across London are called to a range of incidents including road traffic collisions, flooding and animal rescues. Firefighters also do lots of preventative work within the community to help stop fires from starting in the first place.”

The Brigade was called at 1823 and the incident was over for firefighters at 1955. One fire engine from Stoke Newington Fire Station and an aerial ladder platform from Forest Hill Fire Station attended.
