Four fire engines and around 25 firefighters were called to reports of a rubbish fire in an underground area in Launders Lane in Rainham.
The fire was contained underground and crews handed the scene over to the Environment Agency.
The Brigade was called at 0932 and the incident was over for the Brigade at 1140. Fire crews from Wennington, Dagenham, Hornchurch and Barking fire stations are at the scene.
The cause of the fire is not known at this stage.
