Around 75 firefighters tackled a fire at an empty, four storey block of flats on Albion Street, Bayswater this evening. The building is believed to be under refurbishment and part of the basement and the ground floor was alight.

Station Manager Peter Wolfenden who was at the scene said:

“Firefighters removed some cylinders from the building as they can explode when exposed to heat. Part of the basement and the first floor was alight and crews worked hard to minimise the spread of the fire. They searched the property to ensure there were no further cylinders inside.”

Around a third of the basement and first floor was damaged in the fire.

15 fire engines were in attendance from stations including Paddington, Kensington and Chelsea fire stations.

The Brigade was called at 2047 and the fire was under control at 2245.

The cause of the fire is not known at this time.
