Firefighters assisted police and gas engineers at a gas leak in New South Quarter, Whitestone Way in Croydon yesterday evening.
Crews were called following reports of a collision between a car and a gas main and assisted police to evacuate around 900 members of the public from neighbouring homes and businesses as a precaution.
Firefighters also assisted in detecting gas levels and used covering jets to provide a safe working environment to enable gas engineers gain access to the damaged gas supply.
The Brigade was called at 2023 on Sunday evening and the incident was over for firefighters at 0836 on Monday morning. Four fire engines and 21 firefighters and officers from Croydon, Norbury and Wallington fire stations attended the incident.
