Eight fire engines and around 60 firefighters were called to a fire at a recycling plant in Staines Road, Feltham.

A shredding machine and a number of portable generators were destroyed in the fire and half an HGV trailer was damaged. A pile of recycling was also alight.

The Brigade's 999 Control Officers took 12 calls to the fire.

The Brigade was called at 2325 and the fire was under control at 0247. Crews will remain at the scene damping down into the morning. Fire crews from Feltham, Heston, Hayes, Southall and surrounding fire stations, as well as colleagues from Surrey Fire and Rescue Service, attended the scene.

The Brigade's fire investigators believe the most likely cause of the blaze was the unsafe disposal of smoking materials.

Safety advice for smokers:

  • Make sure you have smoke alarms fitted in every room you regularly use in your home including in the hallways.
  • Never smoke in bed.
  • Always ensure you stub out cigarettes properly and dispose of them carefully.
  • Keep matches and lighters out of children's reach.
  • Never leave lit cigarettes or cigars unattended.
  • Empty ashtrays carefully, ensuring all smoking materials are stubbed out and cold.
  • If you must smoke, do it outdoors.
