Twenty people were evacuated last night after a fire broke out in a nail salon on Church Road in Stanmore. Firefighters evacuated residents from flats above the shop.

A passer-by noticed smoke and called the Brigade. A small part of the shop was damaged by fire. Fortunately no injuries were reported.

Fire investigators believe a nail lamp started the blaze. A Brigade spokesperson said: “We believe the nail lamp had been accidentally left on after the shop had closed. Our advice is always to switch electrical equipment off, especially items that get very hot, like this lamp.”

The Brigade was called at 2052 and the incident was under control by 2136.

Four fire engines and 21 firefighters and officers from Stanmore, Mill Hill and Harrow fire stations attended the incident

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
