Eight fire engines and 58 firefighters and officers were called to a fire at flats above shops in Tolworth Rise South in Tolworth this morning.
The first floor and loft conversion of one flat were damaged by fire. The loft conversion of a second flat was also damaged by fire.
Sadly two men died at the scene. A further five people suffered smoke inhalation and were taken to hospital by London Ambulance Service crews.
The Brigade was called at 0455 and the fire was under control at 0744. Fire crews from New Malden, Surbiton, Sutton, Wimbledon, Kingston and other surrounding fire stations attended the scene.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
