Firefighters acted quickly to stop a potentially large gas leak after a car reversed into the porch of a house rupturing a gas pipe on Lansdowne Hill in West Norwood.

Station Manager Chris Payton said:

“It appears that a car has been accidentally reversed into the front of a house damaging the gas intake. The car has then been driven forward into an adjacent property. The driver was checked over by London Ambulance Service and thankfully she was unhurt.

“Firefighters used industrial strength putty to temporally stop the leaking pipe.”

Six people from four properties were evacuated as a precaution.

The Brigade was called at 1236. Firefighters from West Norwood and Battersea fire stations are at the scene.
