Firefighters rescued an elderly couple from a house fire on Bedford Avenue in Barnet this morning.

Paddington Station Manager Steve Chesson said:

“When crews arrived they found a well developed fire on the first floor and flames coming out of the roof. Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus led an elderly man and elderly woman from the ground floor. They were treated by London Ambulance Service crews.

“The whole of the first floor and roof was damaged by the blaze. Fire crews prevented the fire spreading to surrounding properties."

The Brigade was called at 0734 and the fire was under control by 0956. Four fire engines and 20 firefighters from Barnet, Southgate and Finchley fire stations were at the scene. The cause of the fire is believed to be accidental.
