Southwark - basement fire at block of flats

Six fire engines and around 35 firefighters and officers were called to a fire at a block of flats on Rotherhithe New Road in Southwark last night.

A small part of the basement in the five floored building was damaged by fire. The fire damaged a timber stud walled compartment in the basement area containing three mattresses and
some personal items.

Around 20 people evacuated from the flats above the basement and there were no reported injuries.

The Brigade was called at 2032 and the fire was under control by 2309.  Fire crews from Deptford, Dockhead, New Cross, Greenwich and Whitechapel fire stations attended the incident.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
