Firefighters have issued a safety warning after a portable lamp ignited bedding and caused a fire at a house in Ruckholt Road, Leyton.

Four fire engines and 21 firefighters and officers were called to the fire at a terraced house of two floors. Part of the ground floor was damaged by fire and the first floor sustained smoke damage.

One man and one woman were rescued by crews wearing breathing apparatus. They were treated at the scene for smoke inhalation before being taken to hospital by London Ambulance Service crews.

A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said: “People need to make sure their portable lamps are standing upright and kept well away from objects and materials that might cause a fire.”

The Brigade was called at 0637 and the fire was under control at 0730. Fire crews from Leyton, Leytonstone, Stratford and Homerton fire stations attended the scene.
