Three fire engines and around 15 firefighters and officers were called to a fire in a flat on Tavistock Street in Covent Garden this afternoon.
Part of a four roomed, ground floor flat in the five storey block was damaged by the fire. Fire crews wearing breathing apparatus discovered a man in the flat’s kitchen but sadly they were pronounced dead at the scene.
The Brigade was called at 1646 and the fire was under control by 1726. Firefighters from Soho, Islington and Kensington fire stations attended the incident. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
